Perhaps no other publisher in the video game industry has formally divulged multiple different projects that it has in the works to release on next-gen platforms other than Bethesda. At last year’s E3, Bethesda announced both Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI and in the process made it clear that both games were planned to not arrive until the next slate of consoles each release.

In a new interview with IGN, Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard was asked about these upcoming platforms from both Sony and Microsoft and what he initially thinks of each. While Howard obviously was restricted from saying too much about either the new PlayStation or Xbox platforms because of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), he did mention that he thinks both are poised for success out of the gate.

“They’re doing the right things,” Howard said simply. “In my mind, no one is screwing up at the starting line, which some people have done before.” He expanded on this further later on saying, “I think everybody has learned their lessons in some good ways and in some hard ways. They’re very, very thoughtful about their audience and the developers. I think my view of it is it’s going to be awesome across the board. Not just the systems, but the business models.”

Howard was then asked specifically about the upcoming PlayStation console, which Sony has already somewhat detailed themselves. While Howard still didn’t want to expand on much about the new platform for fear of saying something that he’s not supposed to, he did acknowledge that what the hardware will allow really aids Bethesda Game Studios by stating, “It helps the kind of games that we make tremendously.”

While none of this is groundbreaking information from Howard, this does signal one of the first instances in which we’ve heard from a prominent developer in the industry with their thoughts on next-gen. Hopefully, both the upcoming PlayStation and Xbox platforms turn out in the way that Howard seems to expect them to.
