Out of nowhere, rumors have started circulating that Respawn Entertainment would soon stealth announce and release a new game next week. The title will be a free to play Titanfall Hero Battle Royale Game titled Apex Legends and it will be releasing on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. There were previously just incredibly vague comments being made from different popular streamers stating that they had attended a “secret event” in Los Angeles. However, we now have more information from Rod Breslau claiming he has sources close to him who have played and have knowledge of the game. On top of that, Kotaku’s Jason Schreier basically verified those same rumors.

Rod continued on with specifics for the new Respawn free to play title stating it will include classes/heroes with unique abilities, a maximum of three players per team, and a maximum of 60 players per server. It will also run on a modified version of Valve’s Source Engine just like Titanfall and Titanfall 2 did. Though, the game will not feature Titans, something that was heavily present in the other games in the series.

He also went on to mention that the game will feature microtransactions and loot boxes for in-game content and cosmetic items. Rod compared the approach for Apex Legends to be similar to how Overwatch handles microtransactions.

Supposedly Respawn had invited some of the top streamers around the world along with esports pros from other Battle Royale games to playtest Apex Legends in Los Angeles. Many stated anonymously that the game felt good to play and that they were excited about it.

I am a bit surprised that it has taken this long for a top dog developer to jump onto the free to play battle royale train. They have to be thinking if Fortnite can become the success that it is, why not us? Even though I believe that Fortnite is a fantastic game, I do believe that the free to play model they use might be the biggest factor on what brings in such a huge player base for Epic. While Call of Duty: Blackout and PUBG’s entries require some compensation, it is refreshing to hear that a big developer will try to take a crack at the newest fad in games.

We’ll keep you updated on this story as it continues to develop. If these reports are true, we should hear more about Apex Legends officially very soon.
