After being leaked last week, Respawn Entertainment and EA finally pulled back the curtain on Apex Legends, a battle royale game set in the universe of Titanfall. While the game does look pretty cool, many were still holding out hope for a full-blown Titanfall 3, with Kotaku even speculating that Apex Legends would serve as a stop-gap between Titanfall 2 and the next mainline game. Unfortunately, Apex Legends’ developers told VG247 and Eurogamer that Titanfall 3 is not in development at this time.

Design Director Mackey McCandlish said to VG247 that “This is the game being made by the Titanfall team, Apex Legends…There is no other team that makes Titanfall.” If this team at Respawn is solely paying attention to Apex Legends, then that leaves very little wiggle room for Titanfall 3 to be worked on or released in the immediate future. Lead Producer Drew McCoy’s comments to Eurogamer cement this fact and also reveal why they didn’t officially reveal the game until today:

“There are some people who think there are too many battle royale games or it’s a fad, the world thinks we’re making Titanfall 3 and we’re not – this is what we’re making…We’re doing a free to play game, with essentially loot boxes, after we were bought by EA, and it’s not Titanfall 3. It’s the perfect recipe for a marketing plan to go awry, so why have that – let’s just ship the game and let players play.”

Mackey McCandlish still seemed optimistic about the franchise to VG247, making it clear that the story of Titanfall will continue and that there’s also a chance that another team could make Titanfall 3. “The Titanfall universe is continuing. It takes place in the Titanfall universe,” he said. “That doesn’t mean there never could be another team that makes Titanfall.”

Even though Titanfall 3 doesn’t currently seem to be on the docket, EA and Respawn Entertainment have made it clear that Apex Legends is a game they intend for players to consistently return to over time and create new stories. In the press release announcing the game, Drew McCoy said the game is one where you “come in with a plan but you leave with a story.” In the end, Drew stats that Apex Legends is “not only going to deliver a fun and memorable experience at launch, but something we can keep growing for a long time to come.”

While it is disappointing to hear that Titanfall 3 is not in development over at Respawn Entertainment right now, Apex Legends is already available across PC, PS4, and Xbox One and should suffice series fans for the time being. To get an idea of what to expect from the game, you can watch the first developer diary for the game below. If you’d rather play a mainline Titanfall game with a single-player campaign, Titanfall 2 is still on Amazon.
