The Witcher 3 Reaches New All-Time High Concurrent Player Count on Steam

In the days and weeks following the release of The Witcher TV series on Netflix, CD Projekt Red’s beloved RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has started to see a resurgence of players. Within the past day, however, the game has now reached a new all-time concurrent player count that is higher than when it first launched.

As seen via Steam Charts, a website dedicated to tracking various statistics associated with Valve’s Steam platform, The Witcher 3 recently set a new record for concurrent users playing the game at once on PC. The total of 101,930 was set yesterday on January 1, meaning that, clearly, many folks around the world decided to kick off their new year with a return (or first-time visit) to the world of The Witcher 3.

What’s most baffling of all about this is that The Witcher 3 is now nearly four years old. For the game to reach new all-time concurrent player counts that are higher than what was seen in May 2015, the month in which The Witcher 3 originally launched, is pretty staggering and rarely ever happens. For reference, the peak concurrent player total for the game back when it released peaked at 92,268. Furthermore, the average player count of The Witcher 3 via Steam has hovered around 30,000 players, which is the second-highest total that the game has had since its launch month.

As mentioned, it seems that The Witcher series on Netflix has proven to be a major catalyst for why so many people are now diving back into The Witcher 3. When comparing December 2019 to November 2019’s player numbers, The Witcher 3 on PC saw a 100%+ increase in its player numbers.

With a notable lack of major new releases here in the early part of 2020, it stands to reason that The Witcher 3’s player totals could keep climbing higher and higher in the coming days and weeks. Regardless of where the game might peak, however, the real winner here seems to be CD Projekt Red. I’m sure that the studio is loving this resurgence, especially in the lead up to the release of Cyberpunk 2077 later this year.
