The Outer Worlds Won’t Have Your Typical World Structure and That’s Okay

It’s safe to say that Obsidian’s reveal of The Outer Worlds just a few weeks back at The Game Awards was one of the show’s most exciting announcements since it seemed to be more in line with one of the studio’s most popular past titles, Fallout: New Vegas. While this seems to be the first-person RPG that many have been waiting for Obsidian to return to, though, it seems like you should keep your expectations in check, especially when it comes to the scope of the game’s world.

In a recent piece from Kotaku, it was reported that The Outer Worlds won’t follow an open world structure that you might expect from it initially. Kotaku saw footage of the game just a few weeks ago and said that each section of the game’s two different planets that you can explore are divided into multiple sections rather than being one large world to run about. Each of these different locations will still be large in their own ways and will give you plenty to see, explore, and accomplish, but they just won’t be as vast compared to typical open world games.

“While we aren’t discussing the exact amount of areas, a good bit of context for the approach is to think of what we did in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II, with potentially more ground to cover and explore in each area,” Obsidian’s Mikey Dowling said in a statement about the game’s structure. Based on this description from Dowling, I’m most reminded of Borderlands and the way that the worlds in both entries of that series are comprised. I’m also a sucker for Obsidian referring to anything from The Outer Worlds in the same breath as KOTOR II, so sign me up.

There’s still a lot more to learn about The Outer Worlds and it’s definitely one of next year’s games I’m most intrigued to see more of. Hopefully, it won’t be too long before we can see some more extended gameplay footage from this RPG. In the meantime, you can check out some new screenshots from the game that were recently released.

The Outer Worlds is scheduled to launch in 2019 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
