The Occupation is Set in the Same Universe as Ether One

Manchester-based developer White Paper Games’ upcoming game, The Occupation, takes place within the same universe as the studio’s debut project, Ether One.

As you may remember, Ether One was a first-person adventure game that released back on PC in 2014, before coming to PlayStation 4 later in 2015.

In it, you played as a “Restorer” whose job is to investigate the thoughts of Jean Thompson, a 69-year-old woman who has been diagnosed with dementia, and whose memories you have to reconstruct. The game took place in Pinwheel, which apparently shares the same universe as the setting of The Occupation, Turing (which is a fictionalized version of Manchester), and is set at the same time.

According to White Paper Games’ co-founder Pete Bottomley, the world and universe is one the most important parts of the games the team create. And thus naturally there will be more than one lore reference based on Ether One in The Occupation.

Bottomley confirms that this doesn’t mean you have to play Ether One to play The Occupation, but it helps with world building for people that like to look for those types of details (which is me).

For those that don’t know: The Occupation is a politically driven, first-person narrative game set in 1980’s England. In it, you play as a whistleblowing journalist whose next four hours will determine the outcome of The Union Act — a controversial piece of legislation that threatens the civil liberties of the British population — and the future of the country.

The Occupation is in development for PC, expected to ship sometime next year. Console versions of the game remain up in the air. If you haven’t already, be sure to check out the game’s tense announcement trailer.

In other recent and related news, publisher Humble Bundle has partnered with the aforementioned White Paper Games to publish The Occupation.
