Bandai Namco announced on September 16 that Tales of Arise sales have reached over 1 million copies on PS4, PS5, PC, and Xbox – how do these numbers compare to the rest of the JRPG franchise?

Tales of Arise is the first console game release of the JRPG franchise in five years, following Tales of Berseria on PS3 and PS4. The game strives to bring the series to new heights with a revamped battle system and beautiful anime graphics.

The official Twitter account for Tales of Arise announced the game has shipped over 1 million copies worldwide. This includes physical and digital sales on every platform. Counted from the game’s release in Japan on September 9, and its worldwide release on September 10.

Tales of Arise producer Yusuke Tomizawa announced on Twitter that with the launch of the game, the Tales of series has now reached over 25 million copies sold in total. He shared a new logo made for the occasion, based on the 25th-anniversary logo. Tales of Arise celebrates the 25th anniversary of the franchise, which started with Tales of Phantasia on Super Famicom on December 15, 1995.

Additionally, Bandai Namco also announced sales for Tales of Berseria have topped 2 million copies. Meanwhile, sales for the Tales of Vesperia remaster have topped 1,5 million, and together with the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, the game has now sold 2,88 million copies.

Is Tales of Arise the best selling game in the JRPG series?

Right now, Tales of Arise is according to Bandai Namco the fastest game in the series to reach 1 million copies sold. It reached this milestone in a week.

Meanwhile, the three best-selling games worldwide are according to Bandai Namco: Tales of Destiny with 1,720,000 copies, Tales of Symphonia with 2,400,000 copies, and Tales of Vesperia which just reached 2,880,000 copies.

Right now, Tales of Arise is still behind, but if it keeps this momentum, it could get a very good spot in the ranking of the best-selling games in the series.

Personally, I believe there are several reasons why Tales of Arise is selling so well. First, the game has probably been in development since Berseria‘s release five years ago. And while the development was hit by the pandemic, Bandai Namco didn’t cut corners and delayed the game from its 2020 planned release. The fact that it got a worldwide release, including on Steam, must have greatly helped too. Especially with Steam preorders open, which means price adjustments were in place for countries outside western Europe and North America.

Lastly, a special illustration with protagonists Alphen and Shionne was shared for the occasion, drawn by character designer and art director Minoru Iwamoto. You can find it below. Meanwhile, the new mobile game Tales of Luminaria will soon get a livestream, read the details here.

What do you guys think of Tales of Arise so far? Personally I believe it’s the best game in the series in a while, surpassing Tales of Xillia 1 and 2, Zestiria, and Berseria by far. So I’m pretty happy the sales for Tales of Arise are doing so well, and hopefully the remasters and remakes are coming soon. I’m hoping for Tales of Destiny 2 to finally be released outside Japan.
