You would think by now that Nintendo would realize that the Super Smash Bros. community is fed up with Fire Emblem fighters. Surely they can’t announce another one as their big 2020 reveal?! Oh, ye of little faith. And while Super Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai was having a giggle, you can watch some of the most ardent fans die inside during the latest reveal.

If you somehow missed the news, we are getting a new Fire Emblem character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Revealed in a SSB themed Nintendo Direct earlier this week, fans of the series found at that Byleth — the protagonist of Fire Emblem: Three Houses for Nintendo Switch — is going to be the final character in the first pack of DLC. And with this cancelling a load of rumors (like that Dante from the Devil May Cry series would be the final character), many had their hopes dashed.

But don’t take my word for it, you can see it in action:

Heres the crowds reaction for Byleth compared to the other Smash reveals 😥. from r/smashbros

In the video above, you can see the most hardcore fans on the East Coast — the ones who camp out and watch the Nintendo Directs from Nintendo NYC. Compared to the reveal of Banjo Kazooie (around the 1:00 mark) where you can see an eruption of excitement from the crowd, the reveal of Byleth is basically a whisper. Seriously, the moment he is revealed the crowd goes dead silent.

And this is a fairly noteworthy reaction, because Nintendo NYC is known for some of the heaviest hype and excitement over characters and new game reveals. Hell, when Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was initially revealed, the crowd nearly managed to blow out speakers in this recording:

Moral of the story, Nintendo? Read your audience. Yeah, Fire Emblem: Three Houses is an amazing game for the Nintendo Switch, and Byleth deserves to share the stage with other properties. But the dedicated crowd of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players are pretty tired of Fire Emblem, whether you like it or not.

In any case, both Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Fire Emblem: Three Houses is available now exclusively for Nintendo Switch. If you haven’t picked up either game yet, feel free to purchase them physically on Amazon to help support the site. Meanwhile, check out our article of the six characters we would like to see in the next round of character DLC for Smash Bros.
