Super Robot Wars, the tactical RPG crossover featuring multiple different mecha or sci-fi anime, will soon celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2021. While the series features characters and mecha ranging from Gundam, Getter Robo and Mazinger, to Macross, Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop. each game traditionally features “Original Generation” characters. These are nameable protagonists specifically created for each game by Bandai Namco, with their own original mecha as well.

As the Super Robot Wars games piled up over the decades, hundreds of OG characters were created. Which prompted Bandai Namco to create the sister series Super Robot Wars OG, which isn’t an IP crossover but only features the OG characters from various past SRW games. Many characters, mecha, and story elements from old Banpresto games are used as well, such as the Compati Hero series.

Super Robot Wars OG is an unique and fascinating franchise in game history, in how it works as a prequel, a remake, and a sequel to past SRW games. The series often introduces the OG characters prior to the events that happened in their game of origin, rewrite said events, and keep said characters permanently. The Super Robot Wars OG series started in 2002 and is made of four main games as of now. The latest being Super Robot Wars OG The Moon Dwellers, released in 2016 and PS3 (Japan only) and PS4. Multiple anime adaptations have happened as well.

As Masami Obari noted on Twitter, October 2, 2020 marked the tenth anniversary of the first episode of Super Robot Taisen OG The Inspector, the last anime adaptation we’ve got. Obari directed that one, and said he’s love to make more Super Robot Wars OG anime:

Obviously, Masami Obari often says he’d like to work on things, and it doesn’t necessarily happen. However, as SRW celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2021, it’s possible we’ll soon get a new Super Robot Wars OG game and / or anime adaptation.

It’s also interesting to note that Producer Takanobu Terada hinted back on the February 2020 SRW stream that they weren’t done yet writing the script for the next Super Robot Wars OG game. They should have finished by now though.

The latest Super Robot Wars stream happened in August. Producer Terada most notably denied the decades old urban legend stating OG character Masaki and his mecha Cybaster were ripped-off from Aura Battle Dunbine.

In either case, while nothing was announced yet, it’s certain a new Super Robot Wars PS4/PS5/Switch game will release in 2021 for the 30th anniversary. On the August stream, Bandai Namco mentioned another stream should be happening in October, which should be soon. We’ll be sure to cover it as always.
