Star Citizen is known as one of the most-pledged crowdfunding projects of all time, and now it has hit a milestone the likes of which have never been seen before. The crowdfunding campaign has reached $200,000,000 USD in pledges. What?!

According to the official website of the game, which is developed by Cloud Imperium Games, the funds raised has surpassed a whopping $200 million milestone contributed to by over 2.1 million generous patrons.

It’s not too surprising, considering the developers made a $27,000 DLC pack for the most generous of backers. That doesn’t mean that the game getting close to Grand Theft Auto V‘s production budget in crowdfunding alone isn’t one of the most mind-boggling achievements in recent years. For perspective, Grand Theft Auto V had a production budget of $265 million and an unknown marketing budget.

That is a Rockstar game, Star Citizen is an indie game turned monster title. Thanks to crowdfunding pledges, Star Citizen and Squadron 42 Staff grew to 475 Employees in February this year. The campaign began in 2012 and has amassed 2.1 million backers with, yet again, $200 million raised.

I can’t even comprehend this figure, it’s mind-blowing. We’ll be waiting a while before the game sees itself officially release as a full title, but until then… I’ll be sitting here with my non-existent pledge.

It goes free for a week this week though, so check that out while you can!
