Without a doubt, 2019 has been a weird year in watching the crossovers between rapper Soulja Boy and the gaming industry. And that saga continues — Soulja Boy has taken credit for the retirement of Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime in a recent Tweet. This begs the question–how powerful is Soulja Boy?!

On Thursday afternoon, Nintendo of America shared a message from Reggie where he announced his departure from the company as he moved to grow both professionally and get back to his family:

While the announcement disappointed most everyone given Reggie’s legendary status in the industry, there is one person who was willing to take credit for the move: Soulja Boy. In a Friday night Tweet, Soulja Boy admitted the crime: “I made him retire.”

All jokes aside, Soulja Boy and Nintendo have a spotty past, likely filled with a lot of backend communique with lawyers. In December 2018 he began advertising two new game systems that were really just bad Chinese emulators. Despite openly challenging Nintendo’s legal team to come after him (spoiler alert: they did), he eventually turned to making a PlayStation Vita clone that was similarly shut down by Epic Games after claiming Fortnite would be supported.

Obviously, the Tweet is all a joke (as is a lot of Soulja Boy’s 2019 moves in the industry). And he is without a doubt receiving a fair amount of backlash for even suggesting he cancelled Reggie’s tenure:

The internet is still in a somber, yet celebratory mourning over Reggie backing away from Nintendo. While there is certainly an air of sadness in leaving behind a personality that has been so associated with the brand (and many many memes), the other major titans of the industry — PlayStation’s Shawn Layden and Microsoft’s Phil Spencer — imparted touching words about his departure. Meanwhile, Reggie-based fan creations have been surging in the Nintendo community, including a custom amiibo created by fans.

However, this may just be preparation for the worst to come–given that Bowser is officially the head of Nintendo of America. We have entered the end game now, everyone. Regardless, let’s just take this for what it is — a funny congratulation from Soulja Boy on Reggie Fils-Aime retirement.
