Last night, Bandai Namco Entertainment made several fighting game fans very happy with the announcement of SoulCaliber VI at The Game Awards. Today, more details about the Unreal Engine 4 powered fighting game have been unveiled, giving us a better idea of what to expect when the game releases next year.

As was expected, SoulCalibur VI will retain a similar fighting style to previous games in the series. The game focuses on weapon-based combat with Ring Outs, and has an 8-Way Run movement system to provide smoother 3D movement. The game does introduce one major new mechanic to the series though: the Reversal Edge. According to the developers, the Reversal Edge will allow characters to clash and counterattack each other based on their opponents actions; it is definitely a system I am looking forward to learning more about in the future.

Interestingly, the story takes place in the 16th Century, and will actually revisit events from the original SoulCalibur in order to uncover “hidden truths”. The game will contain both new and returning characters, with Mitsurugi and Sophitia being the two main characters confirmed at this point. We will be sure to share more details with you about this game’s intriguing story as more about it is unveiled.

Mark Religioso, Brand Manager for Bandai Namco Entertainment America, commented on the game:

“The fast and kinetic gameplay of SoulCalibur is on full display in SoulCalibur VI. A stellar lineup of characters and weapons, combined with a simple control layout means gamers of all skill levels can jump into the action and decimate the competition.”

You can check out some screenshots and some new art for the game below. SoulCalibur VI is set to release on PC, PS4, and Xbox One sometime in 2018.
