Sony Interactive Entertainment and hardware developer Lenovo have today announced a partnership that involves the PlayStation VR headset.

In a deal that will last for the next two years, Sony has agreed to license the design of the PlayStation VR to Lenovo. With this design, Lenovo will use it to create their own Lenovo Mirage solo VR headset.

Lenovo VP Yao Li said that with this agreement, it “will allow us to work together to greatly enhance the design sophistication and appeal of the rapidly expanding VR field, and is an outstanding example of how great consumer brands in the VR industry can work together to benefit the consumer VR market.”

Riley Russell, Chief Legal Officer at Sony Interactive Entertainment also gave a statement regarding the new deal with Lenovo and said the following:

“We are pleased to announce that we have licensed the PS VR headset design to Lenovo. The industrial design for PS VR has been widely acclaimed, and that was the result of years of hard work by PlayStation engineers. This agreement with Lenovo is a testament to the quality of PS VR’s design, as well as SIE’s commitment to creating great virtual reality experiences and helping the VR industry expand.”

The design of the PS VR has been lauded for its comfortability compared to other VR headsets on the market, which is something that Lenovo surely knew in advance when trying to come to this deal with Sony. Personally speaking, it’s my favorite of the three major headsets on the market compared to HTC Vive and Oculus Rift at least in terms of form factor.

We’ll keep our eyes peeled in the coming months to see more of just what Lenovo might create with this partnership now in place.
