It’s been five years since we got our last game from Rocksteady, four if you include Batman Arkham: VR. Rumours have been swirling for a little while now about what their next game may be, and today, all speculation has been put to bed, as it’s now been confirmed.

A short tweet from the British developers confirmed that their next game would, in fact, be based on the Suicide Squad franchise. The tweet comes complete with a picture of Superman and sports what is likely the new logo of the game.

While no other details were shared about the game, Rocksteady confirmed we would get more information in just a couple of weeks on August 22. The details and full reveal of the game are due to come at the DC Fandome event, a 24 hour spectacular for DC fans, which takes place on that date.

It’s interesting to see that the rumours are true and DC and Rocksteady have decided to go down the Suicide Squad route. There’s tonnes of potential with the Suicide Squad IP and the characters it involves and it should offer a different take on the “superhero” genre. The first Suicide Squad movie was universally panned by critics back in 2016, however, a sequel to that movie is now in development from Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn.

While Rocksteady has historically made the majority of the Batman Arkham games, it’s looked increasingly likely that WB Montreal had taken over that mantle and are working on the next game in the series. This has left the door open for Rocksteady to go ahead and make the new Suicide Squad game.

Rocksteady’s series of Batman games have been very successful so far, both critically and commercially, with Arkham City recently announced to have sold over 12.5 million copies, making $600 million in the process. If they can make a Suicide Squad game anywhere near the quality that they’ve managed with the Batman ones, there’s definitely cause to get excited.
