Editor’s Note: This article contains minor spoilers for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.

Resident Evil 2 has been out for a couple days on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. As is usual with big releases, players have already started to dig around in the games code and see what they can find. While digging through the game’s code Resident Evil Modding Forum user ZOMBIEALI found something very interesting: Chris Redfield’s model from Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is located within Resident Evil 2’s files and is actually playable.

As some of you may remember, Chris Redfield had a minor role within Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and its DLC. He appeared at the end of the game in an Umbrella branded helicopter to save playable character Ethan Winters. He was then the focus of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard’s Not a Hero DLC and then appeared briefly at the conclusion of the End of Zoe DLC as well. This model has seen quite a bit of use before, so it isn’t super suprising to see Capcom have a complete model of the classic character.

But why is a completely playable model within Resident Evil 2? The simplest and most likely reason is that Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard share an engine. The aptly named RE Engine was used for both games, so the model could’ve simply been retained within the game’s code. Still, the model’s complete functionality outside of the fact that weapons Chris puts away follow him on the ground does make you wonder what Capcom’s post-launch plans are for the recently released Resident Evil 2 remake.

Apparently, you can try out Chris for yourself with the PC version of the game by extracting the .rar file that can be found on the modding forum into the game’s root. Whether you are a fan of this new Chris Redfield design or not, some PC players will certainty relish in the fact that there’s another character they can technically play as.

You can see ZOMBIEALI’s screenshots of Chris Redfield within Resident Evil 2 below. As I’ve mentioned, the game is currently available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One and can be picked up on Amazon. Players already seem to be enjoying themselves with Resident Evil 2 as the game has sold over 3 million copies and have already spent a combined total of 1854 years on the game.
