Report: Smaller Nintendo Switch to Release This Fall, Production on New Switch Model Will Follow

Previous rumors and reports of Nintendo Switch redesigns are becoming more likely to be true, as indicated by a recent report from Nikkei. A translation from Gematsu reveals that a smaller Switch is due to hit stores this fall, while plans for a more significantly redesigned Switch (and not necessarily a higher-end “Pro” Switch) are less formed but still in the works.

According to the report, the smaller and less expensive Switch will have portability in mind. Even so, users of this Nintendo Switch will still be able to dock it for use on the television. This matches with current presumptions that Nintendo wants an affordable option for consumers, taking the role of the Nintendo 3DS and 2DS models that have dominated the market.

Details are less clear on the “next-generation” Switch, as the translation calls it. Nintendo is reportedly testing out a number of improvements and additions, including “operability and video expression improvements” and “operating system changes” amongst others. Development appears to be at an early point, with the model still being conceptualized and with no clear leader on the project.

The same report also reveals that a “quality of life” project previously spearheaded by late former Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has been shelved. The project was a device meant to monitor and improve sleep quality, but development on the prototype has been halted. Though some within the company wanted to continue development, Nintendo as a whole felt that the product was not “Nintendo-esque.”

This may bring flashbacks to Iwata announcing a “Wii Vitality Sensor” nearly a decade ago on the E3 stage—the device would have read the pulse of players, which would have been integrated into games in one way or another. The accessory for the Wii was quietly canceled, with no word about it after its announcement.

Should Nintendo release the smaller and affordable Switch in the fall as the report indicates, the release will come just in time for Black Friday and the holiday season. Meanwhile, Nintendo Switch competitor Xbox One will have its own redesign: the disc-less Xbox One S All-Digital Edition, releasing this May. We may hear Nintendo’s plans for Switch redesigns for E3 2019, which the company will attend.
