Ubisoft is incredibly dedicated to supporting Rainbow Six Siege and we already know that the developer is carrying the game through to the next generation of consoles as detailed last year, but details were scarce. Thanks to a new interview, it appears as if the plan is to get the game available on the Xbox Series X and PS5 at launch with additional features to keep the community strong.

In a recent interview with Windows Central, game director Leroy Athanass confirmed the plan is to bring Rainbow Six Siege to next-generation consoles at launch but clarifies why it’s not possible to announce a release date just yet. “Why I can’t give you a date is because those dates are, in the end, on the people doing the next-gen consoles,” he explains. “What I can tell you is that we are going to be on [the consoles] from launch. When they will release the consoles; but it’s up to them to agree that. For Siege, our target is to be available right at launch.”

Ubisoft wants to keep the community strong, as Athanass says, “We don’t want to break our community. So, we want people who buy the new system right away to play it with their friends.” He goes on to tell Windows Central that the game aims to include cross-generation multiplayer, “That means if you play on the next PlayStation, you will be able to matchmake with the previous PlayStation.”

That’s not all, as Athanass also goes into detail regarding seeing cross-play implemented, allowing Xbox players to play with PlayStation players. “Again, this is more a discussion between Microsoft and Sony. We would love to be fully cross-play — have Xbox players matchmaking against the PlayStation players. We are ready to support that. And hopefully, this will happen because as I said, it’s a general move in the industry, and there is nothing that can prevent that. It’s just a matter of time before it happens.”

Despite wanting to see Rainbow Six Siege support cross-play, Ubisoft seems to be against the idea of allowing console players teaming up with PC players, “I don’t think there will ever be console cross-play with PC. The only way we could do that kind of stuff is by letting you do that if you want to. By default, you’re always with console. But if you want to match with these players, to have better matchmaking, or whatever, and get your ass kicked by a keyboard and mouse, up to you.”

However, Athanass did mention to Windows Central that they hope to bring cross-platform progression, allowing users playing on a console to transfer their progression to another available platform.

While Rainbow Six Siege released back in 2015, the game has been supported by titled updates such as the most recent Void Edge update. If you want to see exactly what the new update includes, check out our guide here.

Rainbow Six Siege is currently available for PC, Xbox One, and PS4 with plans to be available for Xbox Series X and PS5 at launch.
