PS5 Update Helps Players Launch Next-Gen Versions of Games

Backward compatibility has been a huge sticking point of this year’s consoles. The Xbox Series X | S admittedly got it right with their smart delivery system. The PlayStation 5, on the other hand, has made it much more difficult for players to properly play the best version of a game they own. A recent update for the PS5 is now targeting that very issue, making sure that players always have the option to play the next-gen versions of games.

First pointed out by Twitter user Tidux, the latest PS5 update added a simple notice whenever players launch a game available on both the PS4 and PS5. Now, when players boot up a game like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, they’ll be greeted by a small pop-up. It asks users whether or not they want to play the PS4 or PS5 version of a game. This way, it should be much easier to avoid playing a last-gen version of a game on next-gen hardware. This issue has been especially prevalent in games like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War or Destiny 2. It’s simply extremely easy to download the last-gen versions of those games by mistake.

Players will only see this pop-up if they’re playing a game that has a free upgrade to its next-gen version, hence the reason why it’s so prevalent in massive, established franchises. As opposed to Xbox’s Smart Delivery, Sony has decided that developers or publishers behind PlayStation titles can decide whether or not players get upgrades for free. This has led to some confusion, especially with games like Spider-Man or Control, which can be played on PS5 via backward compatibility, but won’t make complete use of the next-gen console’s hardware.
