Project Triangle Strategy (tentative name) has a surprising choice for its music composer, Akira Senju. You might know him if you’re an anime fan, and his name might bring back some memories for Fullmetal Alchemist fans.

Nintendo and Square Enix revealed Project Triangle Strategy on the Nintendo Direct February 2021, a brand new tactical RPG coming to Switch in 2022. A demo was launched as soon as the Nintendo Direct ended as well. Just try out the game yourself right now if you’d like to know more about its gameplay and characters. We’ll be focusing here on Triangle Strategy‘s development and staff.

Tomoya Asano at Square Enix is the producer of Project Triangle Strategy. He’s also the producer of Bravely Default and Octopath Traveler. This is why Project Triangle Strategy has the same HD-2D graphics as Octopath Traveler. However, all three games are developed by different teams, contracted by Square Enix.

Project Triangle Strategy is developed by studio Artdink, who developed Macross 30: The Voice that Connects the Galaxy and Sword Art Online Lost Song. Artdink is also working on the Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World remake. Lastly, Artdink is also known for A-Train. A  railroad management simulation series. The series is celebrating its 35th anniversary with the latest entry, A-Train de Ikō Hajimaru Kankō Keikaku, releasing on Switch in Japan on March 12, 2021.

However, what caught our attention and the biggest shocker with the reveal of Triangle Strategy is how the game’s composer is Akira Senju. A long time veteran of the music industry in Japan, but who rarely ever scored for anime or games. Akira Senju is more used to handling OSTs of drama series and movies.

Project Triangle Strategy might be the first time Akira Senju ever worked on a video game.

As for anime, Akira Senju scored the OST of Victory Gundam in 1993. He also scored the B’T X anime, the 2004 version of Tetsujin 28-go, and Valvrave the Liberator. All good mecha anime you should watch. And last but not least, Akira Senju was the composer of the 2009 FMA anime adaptation, Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. The last time Akira Senju composed for an anime series was baseball anime Battery in 2016.

Another thing to note is how Akira Senju is one of the directors of the JASRAC. Overall, he’s one of the most important personalities of the musical industry in Japan. It’s interesting to see Square Enix asking him to compose for a game, and it’s exciting to think how it’ll turn out.

Project Triangle Strategy Announcement Trailer (English, Japanese)

Personally speaking, while I enjoyed the battle system of Octopath Traveler, I found the game incredibly lacking in its story parts and dungeon design, if we could even call it that. As such, I’m a bit skeptical towards Asano’s projects. With that said, I hope Project Triangle Strategy on Switch in 2022 will be a pleasant surprise. And the surprising choice of Akira Senju for the OST is a step in the right direction.
