Do you think quarantine is getting to you? It looks like it’s getting to numerous members at PETA. You’ll probably remember a while ago, shortly after Nintendo’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons launched, PETA published a guide on playing the game ethically, stating numerous reasons why the game is cruel towards animals. Basically catching all those bugs and fish and dumping them in a museum. The museum is still being targeted by PETA, but there’s a fantastic twist.

On May 19, PETA released a TikTok video on Twitter, because you know, it’s down with the kids and popular culture. The video shows a digital protest taking place within Animal Crossing: New Horizons. It looks like there were about 7 or 8 players that took part in the protest who swarmed to Blathers’ museum, placed a bunch of protest signs, and started textually screaming, “EMPTY THE TANKS!” before heading off further into the museum where they also start shouting “Fish are friends!” Poor Blathers looks dumbfounded amidst it all.

It seems as if the members of PETA have traveled to their own island to organize and decorate this protest for social media. However, in doing so, the person’s island would have required capturing bugs and fish in the first place to open the museum to the state it’s in. Additionally, for an organization that seems to dislike this game, at least 8 copies of the game would have been purchased by the protesters, adding onto the already massive success of Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ sales.

The video has racked up 2.8 million views, and before you whine about me reporting on this and giving it extra views, it’s something you now know about! Right? So why is PETA so against this? According to the blog post they published, the game presents some “tough ethical questions”. It highlights how fish and bugs are secluded from civilization and captured while other animals can live in harmony on the island.

If you don’t mind the capture of digital creatures because you know it won’t influence your reality, then Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available on Nintendo Switch.
