Despite fan frustration at the lack of some Pokemon and moves as well as a few calls for a boycott, Pokemon Sword and Shield have still proven itself to be a massive success. In its launch weekend alone, the pair of new games sold over 6 million units, with 2 million of those copies being in North America. This not only gives Pokemon Sword and Shield the highest-grossing North American launch in the series but also makes these some of the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch games of all time.

This performance has double that of Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee! in the same period. Last year’s Pokemon games are currently the fifth best-selling Nintendo Switch titles at 11.28 million copies, and this new pair of releases is already over halfway there. In fact, after their launch weekend alone, Pokemon Sword and Shield is already the eighth best-selling first-party Nintendo Switch game, ahead of titles like New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Super Mario Maker 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening.

With how fast this game is selling, it’s easy to see how it could eventually match the success of games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The total sales for the Pokemon series now stand at over 246 million units.

I am currently working on DualShockers’ review of Pokemon Sword and Shield, so you can expect that from us very soon. If you just want to pick the games up, Pokemon Sword and Shield are available on Amazon.
