Pokemon Pass is a new free app that gives players digital rewards for using when they visit participating retailers. To launch the app, The Pokemon Company is giving away free shiny Eevees and Pikachus for the Let’s Go Eevee and Pikachu games. Check out their short trailer below.

As shown in the trailer, players will need to take their app to different retailers (in this case Target) and scan a QR-code to get the reward. For this first event, players will have from May 11 to June 23 to get the code for a level 10 Shiny Eevee or Pikachu. Players will also get access to Detective Pikachu photo stickers just for downloading the app.

It will be interesting to see what the team does with the app. Granted, the rewards will likely be pretty minimal given that the app is free. However, Pokemon events like the release of Detective Pikachu and the launch of Pokemon Sword and Shield seem like sure bets to get Pokemon Pass content.

There is also some potential for integration with Pokemon Go. That game has timed raid battles at local gyms, which could be an attractive way to pair the two apps together. You can also easily see them using this at any major convention.

Pokemon Pass probably won’t set the world on fire. That said, it’s an easy way to give Pokemon fans a way to earn free rewards from the places they’re probably already going. We just have to hope that the QR codes are easy to find. Otherwise, this could quickly become a headache for employees of those participating retailers.

Pokemon Pass is available now on Android and iOS.
