Ever since its skyrocket debut in 2016, Pokemon GO has continued to attract tons of players to catch Pokemon or trade and battle with friends. While the game has been a huge success because of its social/outdoors-focused gameplay, the current climate of the coronavirus pandemic has had an effect on players being able to take their Pokemon adventures outside. Developer Niantic has addressed this in the past few months with some changes to the core gameplay by making it more accessible at home, and that will also include some major changes for the game’s annual Pokemon GO Fest this summer.

Niantic has announced that Pokemon GO Fest will return for summer 2020, but in a different format compared to past years. While the event normally took place in major cities — such as Chicago, Dortmund, and Yokohama last year — this time Pokemon GO Fest will instead take place virtually.

In a blog post from the company, Niantic detailed that this year’s Pokemon GO Fest — which is taking place from July 25-26, 2020 — will be “completely reimagined” for players globally so that anyone can join from home. This year’s event will take place over the course of two days, and for the first time, anyone playing will be able to participate in both days of the event, with Niantic detailing that it will “make tickets available to as many Trainers as possible.”

While no specific details were addressed just yet on the gameplay changes to accommodate the event for this year, Niantic explained that the company has “come up with new ways for the community to connect and team up together” to shift the event to a virtual setting. Despite not being able to gather in-person, Niantic stated that Pokemon GO players can look forward to “new experiences, gameplay, and surprises” throughout what’s planned for GO Fest 2020.

Pokemon GO is available now on iOS and Android.
