Today, Ndemic Creations’ incredibly successful mobile game, Plague Inc., was removed from the China App Store.

According to the developer’s statement, Plague Inc.‘s removal is due to “content that is illegal in China as determined by the Cyberspace Administration of China.” They also state that the game’s removal is out of their control. This means it will not be available on the China App Store for the foreseeable future.

The specific content in Plague Inc. in question is still unknown. Ndemic Creations did state that their top priority is to contact the Cyberspace Administration of China and make sense of the issue, as well as attempt to get the game back up on the China App Store.

Some may assume the game’s removal may be tied to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak that has affected many since it has emerged. However, Ndemic Creations is not sure if that is truly the case. They do make a point to reassure that they are working with organizations to support efforts to contain and control the coronavirus.

Ndemic Creations cites its achievements since Plague Inc.‘s launch eight years ago. The game has over 130 million players, and has been the most popular paid game in China. Looking at the Android App Store, it is currently ranked 66 in Top Free. Coincidentally, it was also in my “Discover Recommended Games” section.

Plague Inc. is still available outside mainland China, and Ndemic Creations is still supporting the game even eight years after its launch.

While it hasn’t been confirmed that the recent coronavirus outbreak is the reason for Plague Inc.‘s removal from the China App Store, it wouldn’t be a stretch if it was. The disease has affected much of the video game industry, with many companies withdrawing from events. Most recently, Microsoft announced they will not be in attendance at GDC 2020.
