CHROMATOSE, a visual novel and JRPG inspired by the likes of Persona 3, Catherine, and Monogatari, has managed to pass their Kickstarter goal of $22,000 — reaching $25,084 in total raised funds with 669 backers — as revealed on their main Kickstarter page.

The team at Akabaka even released new artwork (which have major Persona vibes) as a bonus to celebrate the milestone, giving us a glimpse into the darker themes that the upcoming title will be delving into:

According to their status update, the crowdsourcing campaign managed to unlock their first stretch goal, giving their characters partial voice work:

The team at Akabaka also unlocked ten completed achievements, which are fun little side goals cleared when certain social media requirements are met. As such, all artbooks (which were a part of the backer rewards) will be upgraded to include developer commentary and “ask the dev team” sections. A demo for one of the three unmet characters — Laslo, Mercy, or Imogen — has also been achieved and details on that will be revealed at a later date.

The premise of CHROMATOSE according to the campaign page is: “You’ve awakened in a strange nightmare after a fall that should have ended your life. Around you are amnesiac strangers who are also trapped in this world for their own unique reasons. Escape the collective nightmare in 12 hours or never wake up.”

Such a plot allows for a variety of character stories — ten in all — to be told, each with their own world to explore through. Players can experience 16 possible game setups based on their own personality quirks and as any good visual novel should, there are multiple endings based on the choices made during the main story.

The conversations and relationships built up during the game serve a deeper purpose, as they both strengthen and increase the effectiveness of the protagonist during turn-based card battles.

You can still try out the free demo here and check out the screenshots and gameplay video here. CHROMATOSE is set to release for PC and Mac sometime in 2021.
