Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD has launched on Nintendo Switch today, bringing the 2005 classic to a modern console. However, while reviewing the game there was a noticeable lack of subtitles present. DualShockers learned that the game will be getting full subtitle support shortly after launch.
Throughout Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath HD, there’s a plethora of dialogue that takes place in cinematics, in-game cutscenes, and during actual gameplay. Subtitles are present the cinematics, and most of the in-game cutscenes, but there’s nothing for gameplay.
During gameplay, there are moments where the player is required to speak to characters in the world to learn intel, and there’s also a button to press that makes the protagonist speak out loud, detailing the current objective. All of these lacked subtitles, and to make it worse, as the story progressed the in-game cutscenes subtitles started to vanish, meaning those who need subtitles were missing out on potentially humorous quips.
DualShockers reached out to a representative to ask on the whereabouts of the full subtitle support, and it was confirmed that full subtitles would be made available to the game shortly after launch through a free DLC. The DLC is currently stuck in the depths of Nintendo and could take up to 20 days to be approved and issued.
Furthermore, the DLC pack will include full subtitle support in the following languages: The DLC will include subtitles for the following languages: English, German, Russian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Polish, Swedish, Finnish and Simplified Chinese.
When Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath originally launched in 2005 it had no subtitles at all, I know this from memory, but also from scouring online videos of the original being played and looking at the options screens. Full subtitles were actually implemented when the game was later remastered in 2010.
The game has been revamped for the Nintendo Switch with overhauled interfaces and allows the player to control the camera with the Joy-Con gyroscope. It supports 60fps in HD and anti-aliasing.
