During today’s New Game+ Expo, famed Japanese developer Goichi “Suda51” Suda appeared to kick off the show and provide an intro for the games that were slated to be revealed. While not there to explicitly promote his own work, some new footage from the upcoming No More Heroes 3 did make a debut…just not how you might expect.

Yes, gameplay footage from No More Heroes 3, the latest title from Suda51 and the team at Grasshopper Manufacture, was unveiled to a degree during this New Game+ Expo presentation. The only problem is that, well, Suda was in the way of us seeing the gameplay in its entirety. The gameplay of No More Heroes 3 sat directly behind Suda51’s head while he was speaking, meaning that the entirety of what was happening in-game couldn’t really be seen. It was a cheeky, and very Suda-like way, for the actual gameplay from NMH3 to actually be shown for the first time.

You can check out the segment in question below. Thanks to Nintendo Everything for capturing it.

While many might watch the clip above and be focused on trying to see the footage of No More Heroes 3 in the background, Suda51’s words were, as usual, pretty funny too. The director of NMH3 talked about how he’s been dealing with being quarantined at his own home and how it has provided him an opportunity to not only see his family, but to catch up on some games. In addition to downloading a number of indie games recently, Suda51 even showed off a large stack of titles on Switch, including that of Super Mario Odyssey, that he says he intends to play. “That’s right, I haven’t even beaten Super Mario Odyssey yet,” Suda said jokingly.

Surprisingly, this is the first time since The Game Awards 2019 that we have actually heard anything about No More Heroes 3. As Suda himself mentioned, development processes have absolutely changed this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, so it’s very likely that some of the planned showings that the game may have been scheduled for got pushed to another time. Hopefully, the next time we see this title in action, Suda’s head won’t be in the way.

No More Heroes 3 is still set to release this year, exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. The game’s marketing has in the past made it sound as though that launching within this calendar year would be quite ambitious, so we’ll have to wait to see if it actually ends up arriving on schedule or not as we enter the second half of 2020.
