Today is Wednesday and like every week, Media Create released its sales charts for the Japanese market, giving us a look at how the Holiday shopping period is pushing consoles and games.

The first obvious element is that pent-up demand for the Switch is making sales explode now that Nintendo is managing to put more units on the shelves. Over 220,000 units in a week is a very flattering result, and the console has sold 2,908,416 units in Japan life-to-date. This means that it’ll probably be over three million units this week.
While the Yo-kai Watch Busters 2 topped the software sales, showing once more the popularity of Level-5’s child-friendly IP, exceptional Switch sales pushed the most successful games on the console, including Super Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Super Mario Odyssey also passed a million units sold in Japan this week, even if Splatoon 2 appears to still be unreachable as the Switch’s best selling game in the country.
The one Nintendo Switch game that appears to have run out of steam early is Xenoblade Chronicles 2, that is doing a bit better than its predecessor, but is close to dropping out of the chart only three weeks after its release. For some reason, it seems that Monolith Soft’s excellent games haven’t yet found as much purchase among Nintendo’s fanbase in Japan as those created by other first party studios.
