Minecraft is the biggest game of the past decade, which is why it is weird to see support for the game ending on several older systems. Last December, 4J Studio ceased support on the PS3, PS Vita, Xbox 360, and Wii U versions of the game following The Nightmare Before Christmas Mash-up Pack. Well over 21 million players picked the game up on Xbox 360 alone, so this news was fairly shocking but understandable considering it was older hardware. Today, support ended for another version of the game – Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition.

This version of Minecraft was supported somewhat differently than the other releases considering the massive differences in hardware, store, and update infrastructure. Since launching in September 2017, Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition has gotten larger updates every two months or so instead of multiple small and consistent ones. Update 1.9 was released for the game today and will be the final patch this version of the Minecraft ever gets.

Surprisingly, this was only briefly mentioned in the official article on the update, calling 1.9 “our final update for the New Nintendo 3DS version and also one of our largest.” According to the developers, this patch will bring Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition more in line with version 1.1.5 of PC and console Minecraft.

While you can check out a full list of patch notes below, highlights include the addition of several new kinds of “entities” like Vindicators and Cartographer Villagers, new blocks like concrete, new enchantments, and eggs that can spawn creatures:

NEW FEATURES

  • Updated codebase in close parity with Minecraft 1.1.5
  • Woodland Mansions
  • Explorer Maps
  • Iron & Gold Nugget Smelting

NEW BLOCKS AND ITEMS

  • Concrete
  • Concrete Powder
  • Glazed Terracotta
  • Shulker Box
  • Frosted Ice
  • Totem of Undying
  • Iron & Gold Nuggets
  • Magma block
  • Bone block
  • Nether wart block
  • Red nether brick
  • Spawn Eggs (Llama, Vindicator, Evoker, Vex)

NEW ENTITIES

  • Llamas
  • Vindicators
  • Evokers
  • Vexes
  • Cartographer Villagers

WORLD GENERATION

  • Underground fossils
  • Natural Magma block generation in the Nether

NEW ENCHANTMENTS

  • Frost Walker
  • Mending

Support ending also means that Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition was the version of Minecraft supported for the shortest amount of time out of any version of the smash hit. Considering Notch had previously lamented that Minecraft could never work on the system, it is impressive that Mojang and port developer Other Ocean Interactive were able to support the game as much as they did.

While Minecraft is no longer supported on New Nintendo 3DS, PS3, PS Vita, Xbox 360, or Wii U, a consistently updated version of the insanely popular game can be played on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, Xbox One, iOS, and Android.
