The League of Legends World Championships 2018 kicked off earlier this week and as of this morning, the first round of the tournament, the Play-In Group stage, has now wrapped up with those teams moving on preparing for some Best-of-5 matchups this weekend.

After four days of play, Edward Gaming won Group A with Infinity Esports coming in second and advancing while the Dire Wolves came in last, officially ending their run in Worlds. In Group B, G2 Esports had a strong final day and won a tiebreaker to secure the top spot with Bahçeşehir SuperMassive coming in behind them Ascension Gaming seeing their exit.

As for Group C, Cloud9 had a 4-0 week to take the top spot with Japan’s Detonation FocusMe advancing ahead of Kabum! E-sports. Lastly, in Group D, G-Rex also went undefeated in their group to advance with Gambit Esports coming in at second and Kaos Latin Gamers in last.

For those that took home the top spot in their respective group, they will advance to face a team that finished in second place (other than from their own group) in the Knockout Stage. The winner of this series will then advance to next week’s phase of the tournament, the Group Stage.

After a random draw following today’s games, here’s what this weekend’s matchups now look like.

  • Saturday, October 6 — Cloud9 vs Gambit Esports
  • Saturday, October 6 — Edward Gaming vs Detonation FocusMe
  • Sunday, October 7 — G2 Esports vs Infinity Esports
  • Sunday, October 7 — G-Rex vs Bahçeşehir SuperMassive

Worlds is off to a pretty hot start and there should definitely be some great games this weekend. G-Rex vs Bahçeşehir SuperMassive, in particular, I think is going to be a slugfest. We’ll see who comes out on top in these games and advances to square off against the twelve teams that are already waiting in the Group Stage.
