Each month, Nintendo adds two or three new games to the Nintendo Entertainment System library that is available to Nintendo Switch Online members. While the service is far from perfect, March is proving to be a fairly good month for Nintendo Switch Online as Kid Icarus and the highly underrated StarTropics are being added to the NES library and Tetris 99, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Splatoon 2 are all seeing important online events.

When it comes to the new Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online games, Kid Icarus and StarTropics are both someone obscure but great games. Kid Icarus is likely the more recognizable of the two as it received a sequel, Kid Icarus: Uprising, in 2012 and protagonist Pit is playable in Smash Bros. Still, this NES game is a bit different as it is a difficult sidescrolling platformer where players try to find three sacred treasures in order to beat the evil Medusa.

StarTropics is the much more niche series of the two, having not seen much recongition from Nintendo since Zoda’s Revenge: StarTropics II released in 1994. It is a top-down adventure game somewhat comparable to The Legend of Zelda, though it stands out by having a surprisingly in depth plot, references to things like Tetris and ROB the Robot, and some more fleshed out RPG mechanics. Mike Jones for Smash! To see both games in action before trying them out for yourself, you can watch the trailer below.

If you don’t care much for Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online but are subscribed to the service to be able to play online, you’ll probably be happy to hear that Nintendo will be holding tournament for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Splatoon 2 online that may qualify players for actual tournaments at PAX East.

That being said, if you are like me, Tetris 99 is probably Nintendo Switch Online’s biggest draw. Nintendo and Arika plan on appealing to that crowd as well because Tetris 99 will be getting its first in-game event, titled Tetris Maximus Cup. This event will see players competing for the most first place wins, with the top 999 players actually getting 999 Gold Points for their account, which is a fairly good deal. You can watch the trailer going over this event below, though it uses the European title of Tetris 99 Grand Prix.

If this month’s notable additions have made you want to pick up Nintendo Switch Online, 12 month subscriptions are currently available on Amazon.
