If you were hoping for an experience like RE7 in Resident Evil Village, you might be disappointed.

Resident Evil Village is almost upon us, releasing in just a few days, and fans of the games are chomping at the bit to get their hands on the next instalment into the Resident Evil franchise.

While some people love nothing more than to be scared out of their wits, others might be put off by the intense horror theme the Resident Evil games are known for. Thankfully for them, this time might be the best opportunity to get accustomed to the game.

According to Resident Evil Village producer Tsuyoshi Kanda in an interview with Axios Gaming, the development team has toned down the horror and have found a middle ground where players who weren’t comfortable before, could now give it a try.

“When we develop a new Resident Evil game, our goal is not always to make it scarier than the previous title, but find a balance to deliver a scary but fun experience for players,” Tsuyoshi Kanda stated.

Kanda went on to say that feedback from Resident Evil 7 included that the title was far too scary and even though that is what the developer’s goal was, they wanted to “create something that anybody can feel comfortable jumping in and playing, so we eased up on the tension curve” when it comes to Resident Evil Village.

There’s many ways to make a game scary and in your face blood, guts and horror isn’t the only avenue. Tension and the feeling that something could happen at any moment is probably one of the best feelings you’d want the player to experience in a horror game.

Thankfully, Tsuyoshi Kanda agrees.

“For Resident Evil Village, we took an entirely different approach with the openness of the village and players not knowing what might be lurking beyond the trees,”

“Something we also always have to pay attention to is the tension curve. We also find that people grow immune to fear if they’re consistently pitted up against a tense situation or environment.

“Those moments of solace act as a buffer to make sure that people aren’t completely desensitized to the horror. The save rooms that you often see in many ‘Resident Evil’ games is a great example of that, where players can take a deep breath and know that they are safe.”

Resident Evil Village will launch on May 7 for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
