It Looks like Nintendo Is Ending Support for Video Streaming Apps on the Nintendo Wii Next Year

The Nintendo Wii might be an older console now in this day and age, but some people still have one hooked up to their TV’s and still use the apps available. However, a Reddit user gIitterboy received an email from Netflix announcing that support for their streaming app will be ending.

The email received by the Reddit user says:

“Unfortunately, Nintendo will suspend all video streaming services on Wii—including the Netflix Channel—after January 31, 2019.

We hope you’ll soon enjoy an even better Netflix experience with additional features on a supported device. Please visit netflix.com/wii for our device list.”

According to the email, it isn’t just Netflix being affected by this suspension as “all video streaming services on the Wii” is stated. So this would include apps such as Watchup, Crunchyroll, and more. User gIitterboy also points out speculation that perhaps support might be coming to the Nintendo Switch:

“Is the “we hope you’ll soon enjoy an even better Netflix” wording a hint at a Switch app?”

While no official confirmation on this has been given we have —this week— seen the Nintendo Switch silently push out a YouTube app for the platform. It would make sense that Nintendo would want to cater to various gamers needs when it comes to what a console can support. So really support for video streaming apps could be a possibility.

Although my take on this is that they’re just encouraging users to move to another currently available platform.

Video streaming services for the Nintendo Wii will come to an end after January 31, 2019.
