Yesterday’s Nintendo Direct had a lot of surprises. Although many people were upset about the lack of Zelda and Metroid news, I thought that, overall, it had some exciting announcements. Skyward SwordSplatoon 3, and even the Switch edition of Fall Guys all have me excited for what’s to come. However, as a big fan of detective games, I was very surprised by the announcement of a western release for Famicom Detective Club. The announcement left me wondering if, in addition to the digital version, we are also getting a Famicom Detective Club physical edition.

After doing some initial research, the evidence doesn’t look good for those of us who still collect physical media. The online listings for both of the games say nothing about a physical release. Additionally, Nintendo likes to specify in their announcements if a game is getting a physical release and neither of the Famicom Detective Club games got that treatment.

While it seems like there’s no evidence for a Famicom Detective Club physical release currently, I don’t think it’s necessarily out of the question. Oftentimes Switch games will launch as digital-only releases and once they’re proven to be popular will get physical ones (i.e. see the Hades announcement from last night). That said, as this is a first-party Nintendo game, it seems like if they wanted to do a physical release, they would have done one right out of the gate.

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Famicom Detective Club was not the only exciting announcement from last night’s DirectNintendo announced a bevy of Super Mario-themed items for the next update of Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
