In the short history of virtual reality gaming platforms, Half-Life: Alyx can be easily named as one of the best VR games of all time. After nearly 13 years, Valve finally brought back the Half-Life series in a totally unexpected way, and the result is incredible.

However, as you may know, VR gaming still needs to grow more to have a considerable share in the gamers’ community, and that seems to be the exact point of struggle between Valve and a portion of fans who were expecting a non-VR version of the game as well. But that problem seems to have been solved, as one of the game’s players has succeeded in playing Half-Life: Alyx without a VR headset using some simple commands.

Discovered by Tyler McVicker, founder of Valve News Network, players can play Half-Life: Alyx without a VR headset using some commands like “vr_enable_fake_vr_test” which enables mouse and keyboard as the main controllers in the game. The video below shows a few seconds of the Half-Life: Alyx gameplay while being played without a VR headset.

Valve had already revealed that Half-Life: Alyx players would gain access to modding tools via Source 2 in order to add more creativity to the game, but now it seems one of the earliest mods for the game is supposed to put an end to its VR exclusivity. It’s yet to be seen how Valve is going to react to the matter if the game becomes fully playable in a non-VR mode.

Half-Life: Alyx is now available on Valve Index, HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, and Windows Mixed Reality. The game received highly-praised reviews for its realistic gameplay and incredible use of VR capabilities while staying loyal to the Half-Life franchise. Ryan Meitzler from our team rated it 10 out 10 as a masterpiece, and if you are wondering why, you can check it out here.
