To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the PlayStation brand, The NPD Group’s Mat Piscatella recently revealed some new statistics via Twitter regarding the best-selling titles in PlayStation’s history in the United States.
To the surprise of probably no one at all, Piscatella said that Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V is the highest dollar selling game in the history of PlayStation. To date, GTAV has sold over 115 million copies and is one of the highest-selling titles of all-time, let alone the biggest piece of entertainment media ever. Seeing it top the charts here as the best performer in all of PlayStation history isn’t too shocking whatsoever.
As for the top exclusive, that spot belongs to another PS4 game. With less than 18 months of availability, Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man has already made the most money in history as a PlayStation exclusive in the United States. Considering this feat, there’s no doubt whatsoever that a sequel is on the way.

The PlayStation 4 has generated the highest dollar sales for PlayStation hardware in U.S. history, while the PlayStation 2 leads all PlayStation hardware in lifetime unit sales.

Piscatella also went on to list various other winners for PlayStation over the years as well. The $20 PlayStation Store Game Card is the best-selling game card ever while the Black DualShock 4 is the highest dollar selling controller ever. The PS2’s DualShock 2, however, sold more units overall. Additionally, the PS4 Gold Wireless Headset has the highest dollar sales for any headset ever.
All in all, these statistics just continue to largely reiterate how strong the PS4 generation has been for Sony, especially in terms of dollar sales. While the PS4 will almost surely never pass the PS2 in terms of units sold, it’s arguably been the strongest generation in the 25-year history of PlayStation.
We’ll have to see if Sony can top this success starting next year when the PS5 finally hits store shelves.
