In a time where PlayStation has openly said that it will continue to support the PS4 for years to come, questions have arisen in regards to the PS5 sequel of God of War and whether it will also be appearing on Sony’s last-gen platform. After all, other upcoming titles like Horizon Forbidden West will also be cross-generation games for both PlayStation platforms. Unfortunately, it seems as though we’ll have to continue waiting to hear more about this possibility for God of War: Ragnarok (unofficial title).

In a new conversation with The Telegraph, PlayStation head Jim Ryan refused to answer whether or not the next God of War installment would be coming to both PS4 and PS5. “Sorry. I’ve got nothing to say about that today,” Ryan answered when the question was posed to him.

While not speaking to God of War: Ragnarok directly, Ryan did go on to explain the reason for why Sony is going to continue to support the PS4 for years to come. “We’ve got a community of PS4 gamers 100 million-strong. It would be wrong to walk away from those people too early,” Ryan said plainly. “And they’ve been engaged with their PS4s this year under lockdown to a greater extent than at any point over the course of the cycle. They’re using their PlayStations. They’re happy with their PlayStations. Why would we stop giving them games?”

Despite continuing to staunchly state that support for the PS4 continues to remain important for Sony, Ryan assured fans that PS5 iterations of these cross-gen titles that will be coming about will still take full advantage of the more powerful hardware. Ryan expressed that these games are “built from the ground up to take advantage of the PS5 feature set” and that there shouldn’t be anything wrong with releasing separate versions for both platforms.

It remains to be seen if the next God of War will indeed end up being a cross-gen game, but if it ends up coming anywhere close to resembling the last game in the series, I’m sure fans will be happy either way. For now, all we know is that this next installment in the series is tentatively set to release in 2021 and will for now only be coming to PS5.
