Genshin Impact PS4 and PS5 players are stuck on these platforms, and can’t play with their PSN accounts on PC or mobile – and judging from new information, out from the Apple Vs Epic Fortnite trial, the lack of cross save might be due to Sony.

As you already know, Genshin Impact is cross platform, as in, you can play online co-op with anyone regardless of your platform. Be it PS4, PS5, iOS, Android, or PC.

However, for an unknown reason, Genshin Impact is not fully cross save. Players on PC can play with the same account on mobile and vice versa. However, PS4 and PS5 players got their accounts stuck on the PSN, and can’t play on PC or mobile with their account.

New revelations from Apple Vs Epic

On May 5, 2021, several email documents of Epic CEO Tim Sweeney have been made public at the Apple Vs Epic trial. In those, we most notably learned how Sweeney heavily negotiated with Sony for the company to allow cross play for Fortnite, in vain.

As shared by Gamespot, Sweeney, starting from May 1, 2018, mailed Phil Rosenberg, senior vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment America. Sweeney asked Sony to allow Fortnite cross play, and explained how if Sony accepted, Epic could delay the announcement of Fortnite on Switch. Tim Sweeney also argued that Sony’s stance on cross play could be illegal by Europe’s laws.

Ultimately, Sony didn’t back down, Fortnite was announced on Switch at E3 2018, and Sony only ended up allowing cross play after pressure from fans in late 2018.

Is it Sony’s fault Genshin Impact isn’t fully cross save?

Seeing all this, it’s very likely Genshin Impact developer miHoYo also had to go through lengthy negotiations with Sony to make cross play possible between PS4/PS5 and other platforms.

Taking this into account, we can speculate that it was possibly even more complicated trying to convince Sony to enable cross save so Genshin Impact PS4 and PS5 players could play on Mobile and PC with their accounts.

Keep in mind this is only speculation. However, we could possibly see beginning of an answer with this new piece of information.

Genshin Impact also has a Nintendo Switch version in the works, announced in January 2020, back when the game was still obscure. miHoYo did not precise yet if the Switch version will be cross save. Personally speaking, I’d guess it’s likely to be so. Hopefully, PC and Mobile players will be able to play on Switch with their existing accounts.
