Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford Says Troy Baker Chose Not to Play Rhys in Borderlands 3

There’s been a bit of a commotion this week surrounding Borderlands 3 and actor Troy Baker, who just a few days ago talked about how seemingly unhappy he was that he wouldn’t be reprising the role of Rhys who originally appeared in Telltale’s Tales from the Borderlands. While Baker seemed to lay the blame at Gearbox’s feet, the company CEO has now stated that it was Baker’s own decision to not return.

Responding to a fan question on Twitter recently, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford was asked about the situation with Baker and why he wouldn’t be playing Rhys. “You’ll have to ask Troy,” Pitchford said. “I was told by the audio director that he turned it down.”

Pitchford went on to say though that he doesn’t believe Baker playing the role of Rhys will be a big deal in the grand scheme of things. “Fortunately, with how Rhys appears in the game, I don’t think it actually matters at all. You’ll see for yourself when the game comes out and you may disagree with me on that or not,” Pitchford explained.

As for what Pitchford might be hinting at with Rhys role in Borderlands 3, I do have a rather crazy theory. Since Rhys was one of the playable characters in Tales from the Borderlands, maybe since you (assumedly) won’t be playing as him this time around, all of his dialogue options will just result in him staying silent. As those who have played Telltale games in the past can verify, if you never choose a dialogue option your character by default will never say a word. So if no one is choosing what Rhys should say this in Borderlands 3, maybe he’d just stay quiet the whole time and wouldn’t need a voice actor like Baker to play said role. This is my galaxy brain hot take that will surely be wrong but I figured I’d throw it out there.

We’ll wait and see if Baker ends up having a response to this statement or not later on. Borderlands 3 is slated to release later this year on September 13 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC via the Epic Games Store.
