Fire Emblem Three Houses New Screenshots Expand on Class System, Skills and Abilities

Nintendo revealed new character profiles, story and gameplay details on Fire Emblem Three Houses. We’ve covered the story and characters part in a previous article. Here are the new details and screenshots regarding the game systems. You can also watch the latest trailer to get a quick refresh on the game’s lore.


Fire Emblem: Three House lets us select between two modes and two difficulties at the beginning. Casual mode will have your allies coming back if they die, while Classic mode has permadeath. Hard Difficulty has stronger enemies than Normal Difficulty.






Fire Emblem: Three Houses uses the usual turn-based system of past games. You move all your units and end your turn. Then the enemy does the same. You can also redo one turn by rewinding time. This function has a limited number of uses per stage, but probably can get upgraded as you progress through the game.




Terrain bonus effects are also back, with forests, forts and the like giving bonuses to units stationed on them. Some terrains also have HP recover effects. There are teleport panels too that are linked to each other.

As the characters in Fire Emblem: Three Houses are students, they will be able to promote to new classes once they pass that class’ exam. Unlike past Fire Emblem games, changing classes doesn’t change which weapons the character can use, and doesn’t reset their level either. Characters can also change back anytime to previous classes they’ve unlocked. Characters can learn how to use new weapons by improving their skill levels.







The different skills are Sword, Lance, Axe, Bow, Fighting, Reason, Faith, Authority, Heavy Armor, Riding, and Flying. Raising these skills unlocks new weapons and exams. Each student can learn anything, but each student has their own strong points and weaknesses. A fraction of the many learnable abilities through skills have been detailed, most of them are stats bonuses:

Swordmanship level 1 : When equipping a sword, accuracy +5, evasion +7, critical hit rate +5
Sword Killer: When equipping a lance and fighting an enemy equipped with a sword, accuracy, evasion +20
Axemanship level 1: When equipping an axe, accuracy +7, evasion +5, critical hit rate +5
Short Range Counter: If you receive an attack from less than a square away, you can counterattack
Reason level 1: When equipping black magic or dark magic, accuracy+7, evasion +5, critical hit rate +5
Faith level 1: When equipping white magic, accuracy +5, evasion +7, critical hit rate +5

One interesting thing is the Short Range Counter skill, which seems to indicate that units don’t mandatorily counterattack anymore, and only do so if they have a counterattack-related skill.









Each class exam takes into account specific skills. If the student has a high skill level in these, they will have a higher probability to pass the exam. The pass rate is indicated before you select the exam, as shown in the last trailer or the screenshots above. Moreover, like the promote items in previous Fire Emblem games, characters also need specific items to challenge an exam, and needs to have reached a required level in other classes.




Fire Emblem Three Houses has some of the usual classes found in past games along with brand new classes. Moreover,  the protagonist can pass these exams as well to promote to new classes. The starting class of each student is either Commoner or Noble depending on their lineage, and they can change to other classes after passing their respective exam. Each class specializes in different weapons. The protagonist starts in the Commoner class, while Edelgard, Dimitri and Claude start in the Noble class.








Outside battle, you can freely roam the officers’ academy, and it’s important to go meet your students and strengthen your bonds with them. Sometimes students will also ask you for advice and you’ll need to select an answer between multiple choices. Fire Emblem: Three Houses also has a calendar and a time system. Students can only train for a set amount of time before getting tired, so it’s important to manage their schedules properly. As a teacher, you’ll also need to take each student’s mood into account. The way a stressed student is negatively impacted wasn’t detailed yet, however.

The new squad system we’ve seen many times in trailers still wasn’t detailed, but Famitsu notes that Nintendo will reveal more very soon.

In a related note, the card game Fire Emblem Cipher already revealed cards for Edelgard, Dimitri and Claude. The Edelgard one is by Kotaro Yamada. The Dimitri one is by Senri Kita,  The Claude one is by Rika Suzuki. The three cards will be distributed for free to attendees of the Cipher Festival 2019, held on June 2 in Kobe, and June 16 in Tokyo.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses‘ character designer is Chinatsu Kurahana, of UtaPri fame. The game is co-developed by Intelligent Systems and Koei Tecmo. It was fully revealed in June 2018. It’ll launch exclusively on Switch on July 26. A Limited Edition was also announced.
