Recently, the president of the massive fighting game tournament, EVO, updated fans on the current registration numbers via Twitter.

Unsurprisingly, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate currently leads all games in registration, followed by other fan favorites Tekken 7, and Street Fighter V: Champion Edition. EVO regularly changes its lineup to feature the newest and most action-packed fighting games. 2019’s competition was the first time in six years that Super Smash Bros. Melee wasn’t featured in the nine-game lineup.

This year’s tournament–which will take place in Las Vegas from July 31 to August 2–features a very similar lineup to 2019. The few changes include the removal of Mortal Kombat 11 and BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle. Replacing these two titles are Granblue Fantasy: Versus–which currently ranks fourth in registration–and the return of Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

Personally, EVO is one of my favorite gaming events each year. I get to watch my favorite Super Smash Bros. Ultimate players partake in unforgettable matches, while also branching out and watching others who are at the top of their game. One of my favorite experiences was watching Injustice 2 during EVO 2018 and witnessing professionals battle it out in a game I played casually. My appreciation for fighting games has certainly increased from watching EVO and seeing just how hard to master fighting games are.

Competition aside, EVO has even more to offer; “EVO is open to anyone, feature stations available for relaxed free play, and offer unique opportunities to meet people from different countries and different walks of life who share your passion.” The event is a great opportunity to meet fighting game fans around the world, and have some matches of your own. Additionally, fighting game announcements pretty regularly happen at or around EVO.

Registration will continue to increase, and hopefully, pass 9,000 participants making it bigger than last year’s event.
