In a short press release, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced that they will shut down the servers for Driveclub at the end of March 2020. The news is not too surprising given that Sony shuttered Driveclub developer Evolution Studio in 2016. However, it is an unfortunate development for fans of the PS4 racer.

Driveclub had a troubled start when it launched in October 2014.  DeveloperEvolution had a number of server issues they needed to work out and the game looked like it might struggle to find an audience. But, in a great example of what can happen with post-launch dev support, Evolution was able to turn the PlayStation exclusive racing game into one of the better (if not the best) racing games on PS4.

Over the years, the team added cars, tracks, and introduced bikes in a standalone DLC. They even helped launch the PSVR with Driveclub VR. All of that added up to a very attractive package for consumers.

Sony announced that they will delist all of the racing game’s content in August 2019 as they prep to take the servers offline. So, if you’ve always thought about giving the game a shot, make sure to pick up Driveclub before then.

Fortunately, the game’s single-player offerings will still be available. That portion of the game still has quite a bit of content, so it’s not all doom and gloom. That said, it’s always sad to see the server’s close down around an online community. Also worth noting, this shutdown will similarly affect Driveclub VR and Bikes.

Driveclub fans should do all they can to enjoy the game’s online modes before they are taken down in March 2020; the game is available for a limited time exclusively for PS4.
