Today marks the launch of Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch, adding to an already awesome month of releases for Nintendo’s hybrid console. While fans of the long-running JRPG series are probably just happy to have the definitive version of Dragon Quest XI, as well as the first three Dragon Quest games, portably, its release actually has some historical relevance regarding the Switch itself. All the way back in 2015, Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition was actually the first game to be announced for Nintendo Switch.
Of course, things were pretty different when this version was announced over four years ago. For starters, we knew nothing about the Nintendo Switch back then other than its existence and codename NX. This announcement came right in the middle of the Wii U era and shortly after Satoru Iwata’s passing, so it was an odd time for the Nintendo where people really didn’t know what was coming next. The Switch has clearly been a success in retrospect, but Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of the Elusive Age – Definitive Edition was one of the first games to get people excited about the next generation Nintendo console.
Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of the Elusive Age – Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch had its own trials and tribulations since its announcement as well. We did not know that the Switch release would be a definitive version of the game with a mouthful of a title that melded elements from both the PS4 and 3DS releases together, only that it was in the pipeline for the NX along with the Japanese exclusive MMO Dragon Quest X. There was even some confusion over whether or not this title was only being considered for the NX at the time, according to a report from Kotaku.
Obviously, the Nintendo Switch version of Dragon Quest XI did not release alongside the Japanese or western launches of the basic version, though this means that Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of the Elusive Age – Definitive Edition has been able to pack in some additional content and features.
