Dragon Quest XI Finally Dethroned on Japanese Digital PS4 Sales Chart by Undertale

Dragon Quest II, Dragon Quest X, Dragon Quest XI, News, Originals, Platforms, PS4, Undertale

Sony Interactive Entertainment released its weekly sales chart for PS4 downloads in Japan, related to the period between August 14th and August 20th. For the first time in four weeks, Dragon Quest XI has finally been dethroned, sliding to fourth place.

The new king is Toby Fox’s Undertale.

Undertale wasn’t the only game that managed to pass Square Enix’s juggernaut, but the other two were still Dragon Quest, and more precisely Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line and the Dragon Quest X: All-in-One Package.

Below you can read the full chart.

Undertale proves to be a winner in Japan as well, and I think there is no higher public acclaim there than beating four Dragon Quest games. That said, Square Enix still gets the bragging rights of having four games in the top-five.

Dragon Quest Builders keeps selling despite its age, probably still propelled by the announcement of the sequel, whike Final Fantasy XIV returns into the top-twenty after one week out of the ranking.

Sonic Mania appears to have had a weak launch, despite being available only digitally. Apparently, Sega needs more than a nostalgic game to move the Japanese audience back into the Sonic fold.

It’s worth mentioning that Dragon Quest XI was dethroned only digitally, as its 3DS and PS4 versions remained at the top of the Media Create charts for physical retail sales. The PS4 itself also jumped back on top of the week, beating both the 3DS and the Switch, selling 34,688, 34,596 and 22,277 units respectively.

While PS4 and 3DS remained relatively stable in the second half of the Obon shopping period, the Switch ran out of steam once more, probably affected by more shortages following the relatively larges shipment that Nintendo managed to pump into the market alongside Splatoon 2.
