Dota Underlords is Valve’s answer to the popular auto-battler genre that was first developed as a mod to Dota 2. Underlords is a standalone version of the game that Valve has quickly been turning into one of the premier titles in the growing genre. This week the game got a ton of changes and additions in what the devs are calling “The Big Update”.

The update has quite a bit to dig into; however, the biggest addition might be the Underlords themselves. The game’s namesakes are finally in the game and you’ll be able to select one to aid you in battle. Both Underlords have 22 Talents for you to unlock, though only half will be available when you start playing. The other 11 will need to be unlocked through playing.
Valve is also adding in a new Duos mode, which will let you party up with a friend and battle against seven other twosomes. Both players will hire and level their own team, but share health and level. You’ll also be able to send your friend gold and heroes to help create the best team possible. The mode has several interesting possibilities and I’ll be keen to see what kind of teams players can dream up.
There will also be a new Freestyle mode that lets you test out new combos before using them in-game. Plus, there is a whole host of new heroes and alliances now in the game. To counter the growing number of heroes available, Valve is implementing a daily Jail, which basically locks eight to twelve heroes away for a day at a time. This should make ranking your heroes up much more manageable. Finally, the team has introduced a UI overhaul that should make things easier to parse at speed whether playing on PC or mobile.
