While the current landscape of shooters today is dominated by major successes like Apex Legends and Fortnite, several studios are still finding their way by delivering more traditional experiences that harken back to older experiences. The upcoming shooter Disintegration from developer V1 Interactive especially is one that comes to mind from one of the co-creators of the Halo series, with the studio sharing a bit more on how Bungie’s iconic series has influenced a lot of the direction and focus of the FPS/RTS hybrid.

Speaking in an interview at PAX East 2020, V1 Interactive environment artist Blake Low shared a bit more insight into the development and making of Disintegration, the upcoming shooter from the studio that merges the gameplay of FPS and RTS games into a new type of experience across online multiplayer and a single-player campaign.

Specifically, one of the topics that Low shed more light on was the influence of the Halo series and Bungie on the development of Disintegration, which is being directed by Halo series co-creator Marcus Lehto. While the game itself is establishing its own identity by merging these two genres together, Low explained how Halo‘s influence and legacy can still be felt in Disintegration and that “you can’t play this game and not feel that familiar smooth first-person shooter that Halo and Bungie did so well; it’s a testament to having design be first.”

While Lehto and the rest of the development team behind Disintegration want it to have its own story and playstyle to stand out in the shooter space, Low explained that “we have this world we built, we have this story we’re telling, but gameplay is king and that’s important in this studio.” In terms of the end goal for Disintegration heading into release, Low explained that the studio wants “a smooth, fun gameplay experience, and that’s something that Bungie always has done well.”

In terms of other recent news around Disintegration, an open beta for the game took place towards the beginning of this month to give players one of their first tastes of the upcoming shooter. We’ve happened to play it a few times over the past few months, including at PAX East 2020 – in the meantime, you can read our most recent impressions from the game’s open beta for more.

Disintegration is in development for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and is expected to launch sometime later this year. You can stay tuned on the game’s official website for news and updates for upcoming beta tests.
