Some new details for the upcoming Digimon Survive have surfaced from the Japanese V-Jump magazine. The magazine itself and the translation were provided by TechnicalSuwako and onkei, respectively. Said details provide us with information on two new characters and two characters we’ve seen before.

Ryou Tominaga – 3rd year middle schooler who is unable to accept that he’s arrived in a different world
Kunemon – They can’t speak human language, but they understand what humans say.

Ryou was first shown in the animated intro released back in July, but up until now not much has been said about him. The fact that he’s shown with a partner adds another character deep into the mix. It’ll be interesting to see how they interact.

Takuma Momozuka – 2nd year middle schooler who participates in the extracurricular camp.
Agumon – The monster that Takuma meets, and evolves from “Koromon.”

Those are the two leads we’ve seen before, but we get a little more information about them now. There’s also a new story update. According to the magazine, a mist rises up while Takuma is investigating the shrine, and a strange presence could gradually be felt. Takuma works together with Koromon to push back monster attacks. Move monsters around like chess pieces to attack or defend.

When they return to their camp lodgings, they find that it is in shambles. While ridden with apprehension, they hear Ryou’s scream coming from within the lodge…. Move around freely during a limited time period to find a way to survive. You can move around on the map, talk with friends, and investigate suspicious points to advance the story.

Recently Bandai Namco released a developer diary starring producers Habu Kzaumasa and Tsuzuki Katsuaki dug deep into the past, present, and future of Digimon video games. And of course this means they touched on Digimon Survive as well.

Kazumasa talks about how the team is trying to build to something that will cater to both the hardcore and casual audiences.  To do this, the team mashed up elements of old school tactical RPGs and adventure games. The devs hope this combo of gameplay styles will make the game more accessible for everyone.

Katsuaki talks about the two different parts of Digimon Survive’s gameplay. The first, which he calls the “drama part,” is akin to a text adventure. You’ll be given a number of options and your choices will influence the story. The “battle part” is a standard tactical RPG; however, choices you make in the “drama part” will influence various conditions in these battles. You can also Digivolve your Digimon during battle. This lets you open up opportunities to exploit your opponent’s weaknesses and finish them off in quick order.

Check out some battle and story gameplay here, and some beautiful high quality screenshots here and here. Digimon Survive will be coming to Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One sometime in 2020.
