Destiny 2 Xbox One X and PS4 Pro Support Update Coming with 4K and HDR

Remember last week when we nudged both Activision and Bungie on their inability to answer why the Xbox One X review units came packed with Destiny 2? Finally, we have the answer. Today Bungie officially confirmed that the MMOFPS will be visually upgraded for both mid-step consoles, the PlayStation 4 Pro and the Xbox One X.

The news was announced in this week’s “This Week at Bungie” — the running Bungie development and community diary for Destiny 2 — that yes, new fidelity updates are just around the corner. According to Bungie “If you’re migrating to these new consoles, or already have, we’ll make it worth your investment.”

However, not both consoles are treated equally. While the PlayStation 4, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X will be getting HDR lighting, the main difference comes with resolution. PlayStation 4 Pro will see an “adaptive 4K resolution” whereas the more powerful Xbox One X will seemingly support full 4K.

Not noted in the list is how these additions would be rolled out. With memory space becoming an increasing issue among both Xbox One X and PlayStation 4 Pro owners (especially with 4K textures), it would be interesting to know what file sizes we may see down the road.

Also worth noting, even the Xbox One X will be technically inferior to the PC version of the game that boasts 4K textures and a silky smooth framerate well above 60fps (or the console 30fps). That said, Bungie’s move to prioritize visuals over framerate is most likely to not create a multiplayer disparity between different console versions.

More importantly, these updates will be coming alongside the Curse of Osiris and Season 2 on December 5, 2017. It wasn’t mentioned explicitly in the blog post, but we can assume that the update will be free for everyone — not just those purchasing the Curse of Osiris DLC.
