Derek Yu Provides Intriguing New Details on Spelunky 2

Spelunky 2 originally had a 2019 release date. Unfortunately, Derek Yu and his team had to make the decision to push the game out of last year as they worked to deliver an experience that would satisfy the devoted Spelunky audience. Of course, fans would prefer to have the game earlier than later, but if there’s anyone who’s going to use a delay in the best way possible, it’s hard to pick someone you trust more than Derek Yu and his team. Today, the developer took to the PlayStation blog to reveal a few new screenshots and some updates on progress.

Sadly, the update doesn’t come with a release date. We’ll have to wait just a bit longer for that. However, the new screens do provide us with a great look at the crisp, new visuals in Spelunky 2. It will be better to actually see them in motion, but so far the game looks great. Yu says that each run in Spelunky 2 is meant to “feel even more like a personalized adventure”. The original game was a goldmine in terms of player-created stories. Telling people about your wild run the night before felt almost like classic watercooler talk, and the team is aiming to add even more variety to encourage that further.

The update also dips into talking about the game’s audio. Eirik Suhrke, who worked on the first game, is back for another go-around. Yu talked about how everything in the game has its own “suite of sound effects”. He used the example of landing on grass sounding different from landing on a conveyor belt. It sounds like a small change, but given how many times players will run through Spelunky 2, this is a welcome addition.

As mentioned, Spelunky 2 doesn’t have a release date just yet. When it does release, it will come to PC and PS4.
