Death Stranding May Have a 2019 Release Window According to Best Buy Canada

The release of Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding is still a mystery. With little teases here and there, it is still uncertain when this game will actually be on store shelves. However, Best Buy Canada seems to know what year we can expect to see Norman Reedus and a bubble baby look at a bunch of beached whales.

According to a post from Reddit user dogsaintnoodles, the pre-order card from Best Buy Canada states Death Stranding will be “available” in 2019. No specific date is given but you can pre-order it now. As of this writing, it is also available online to pre-order through Best Buy Canada’s website with a $79.99 price tag and a release date of December 31, 2019.

I have to emphasize to take this with a grain of salt. The date presented in the online listing is obviously a placeholder, even if that date just so happens to land on a Tuesday this year. However, Sony has been selling its exclusive games on Fridays as of late, including games from second-party studios like Detroit: Become Human and Spider-Man. We can probably expect the same from Death Stranding.

With that being said, there has been an odd amount of talk about Hideo Kojima’s next game’s release as of late. In late December, Kojima made a short statement, asking the important question, “is 2019 the year of the Whale?” Then immediately stating, “please look forward to Death Stranding.” The exact nature of that statement from the Japanese publication Famitsu is unknown but we’ll probably know more when he inevitably reveals it.

Then just a few days ago, Troy Baker took part in the ten-year challenge on Twitter in which he shared pictures of Snow from Final Fantasy XIII and Death Stranding‘s The Man in the Golden Mask with the hashtag “2009vs2019.” Again, this should be taken with a grain of salt. Besides, if Baker decided to share something he probably wasn’t supposed to, he’d probably get a visit from six strong Japanese guys and not be heard from ever again.

While the release date is still unknown, the state of the game is not. Once again, Kojima has been going around the world visiting different developers. However, this time around, he is showing off what he has made since going independent three years ago. Both Remedy Entertainment and Guerilla Games seemed impressed by what they saw.
